When it comes to youth basketball, the coach may be the most important person involved. As a coach you are going to be a leader to these children, and they are going to look up to you and follow the lessons that you have taught them for the rest of their lives. Here are 5 tips for all new youth basketball coaches.
1. Always be positive in everything that you do. This means that you need to give constructive criticism to all of your players, and not only do you need a smile on your face, but you need to put a smile on theirs.
2. Be patient at all times, it is very easy to get frustrated easily with children. If you need a break go get a drink or count to 100, then go back.
3. Everyone plays in youth basketball, because this is the only way that they learn. This years second string may be next years superstars, so let everyone play the game.
4. Don’t choose favorites ever, it will really hurt childrens feelings. Even if you have a superstar, don’t favor one player over another.
5. Have fun, because if you are having fun they are going to be having fun to. This is going to help keep team morale high, even if you lose every game.
